Dealing with food allergies

About 8% of people are having allergy to food. This is according to AAAAI (American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.) Close to a third of that group also have multiple food allergies. Peanuts ranks as among the most common food allergies. This is followed by shellfish and milk. However, there are various allergies which affect different people.

You just have to call in to a restaurant or fast food place and look and see the menu they provide. What is it that is brought as the side dish? Probably, it can be potatoes. Now imagine this scenario when you are allergic to potatoes. People find out about this type of allergy after experiencing random throat swelling or chest pains in the chest. Since potato allergy is not common, confirmation of the allergy requires the allergists to do a second test. A change is seen when a person gets rid of potatoes from his or her diet. Additionally, each person with potato allergy is not the same from another one.

Many individuals think that it is an impossibility living without potatoes. It is sometimes hard; though possible. Nevertheless, one should be careful on what he or she eats. Obviously baked potatoes, potato chips and French fries should be done away with, though potatoes are to be found unexpectedly in various foods. Some pastries, bread and pasta contain Potato starches. Some vitamins, pharmaceutical drugs and supplements list starch, even though they do not list which type.

There are potato starches even in odd things such as envelope glue. For people with acute potato allergy, discovering products containing potato may be hard. A person should switch to wheat or corn based products as a simple step to avoiding potato allergy. Potato chips may be replaced by corn-based chips such as Doritos or Cheetos. The hardest part might be eating out, but several restaurants offer other kinds of side dishes like vegetables, fruits and desserts.

Many people do not understand well potato allergy. There are numerous symptoms that people who are allergic to potatoes may experience. They include: chest pains, sneezing, asthma, runny nose, weepy eyes, contact dermatitis, eczema, atopic dermatitis, throat pain and swelling, abdominal pain, itchy mouth, diarrhea and nausea.

When suspecting that you have the allergy, ensure you go for a test performed by a qualified allergist. Contemporary testing techniques offer some hope to those suffering from allergies by letting them know if their allergies is related to food or much more ordinary thing, like birch pollen.

When you are allergic to food, it is not the entire food but just a single type, like protein. The body reacts differently to each of the proteins. One may make your eyes to water, the other your throat itchy while one may be fatal by sending you into anaphylactic shock. Since you are consuming all the proteins at once, you may get all the 3 reactions.

The contrary is that it is possible that only a single type of food contains the protein that may force you to seek medical attention, the rest are not that medically serious.
